-♦-"I know they know, but I don't want to tell them."

The feeling that shot through her body was an overwhelming surge of power. She would be lying if she said she didn't like it. She knew she would have some explaining to do with her pack mates, but that was later and not now. Until that moment came she would bask in the spirit of being a true leader. But a true leader would never leave, and the feeling dispersed at that thought. And just like that her time of indulgence faded away. She felt worthless again.
What is she anyway? She is an alphess appointed from the previous alpha. She wouldn't even be here if it weren't for thors hospitality. Before it was just the two of them, then the pack grew. He appointed her because he trusted her. Not only as a friend, but a future companion. Those thoughts made her feel warm inside, they calmed her. They nearly reassured her that she was perfect for her position in the pack. But ever since his death she had a hard time remembering that. And this past winter only took a larger toll from her.
As she snapped back into reality when she heard a small cry from the dire wolf. Her quills had entered his skin and some had fallen on the floor. His cried proceeded to get worse the longer they stayed in. He scrambled past her, his sense of direction was nearly gone. He ran with his eyes closed, most likely to avoid assessing the damage she had done. When he stumbled and fell, he stayed there for a moment. Her face remained emotionless as she watched. He then got up once more and ran off into the distance, his cores of pain following him.
She turned around and noticed her pack mates staring at her. Hephaestus was the first to approach her in worry. They all looked at her like something was wrong. Her red eyes mellowed back to their usual blue. Regardless if she was happy or not, it was her first primary color. She closed her eyes as he licked her muzzle with concern. It was a sign of worry and submission. Now she would have to explain her troubles. Fantastic, it's what she wanted to after a stressful time away.
She slowly retracted her quills into her back. The time process of the power surged quills took longer than she had hoped. Sometimes the retracting process was a bit uncomfortable, and this time was no different. She sat down, trying to pick her head up to face the last three members of her pack. There was once an abundance of them. They were once the most feared pack in the lands, and over the last couple seasons they became nothing. She hoped there was an easier way for her to break the news. Now, enough of the run on thinking.
She sat up straight after her quills disappeared into her body. She cleared her throat here goes it all. "My faithful members, as you can all see... The majority of our members have dispersed over the duration of the harsh winter" her stronger voice was slowly returning, "ever since the loss of our once great alpha, Thor, all duties in the eastern pack have crumbled into a small pack of wolves. We were once feared, we were once strong, and we were all once a big family..." she inhaled then exhaled deeply, time for the big guns, "as you can see, I came back alone... My pups grew ill and there was no way for me to heal their sickness, they died within a week of being sick" well, no one said it would be big guns for the whole pack.
She took in another deep breath, "I apologize before leaving you all without a thorough warning... But together we can rebuild the eastern pack. We can all bring back the pride of the pack... If you forgive me..." she knew they would. Her pack as kind, not like her fathers pack. Event he way they were all acting; with concern and worry, she could see they would be there for her. "I'm sorry guys... Sincerely sorry... I won't leave you all again... The eastern pack is my only concern now... I couldn't leave it in the paws of a demon like Warg..." in the back of her mind she was concerned for the dire wolfs health. But that would be for a later date. Now, she had some catching up to do.
