Skölls white speckled body crouched in the long yellowing grasses by the water. His target: a beaver. Not a particularly large prize, but they were hard to catch since they were quick to dive into the depths of the water. It would be a reward to catch, and he wanted to see if it tasted good. He doubted the alphas would care.
He crept forward on his toes, keeping his steps light and his rump down. He approached the edge of the grasses. Surprisingly, the beaver hadn't yet made out his black fur along the tall grass. The beaver walked a bit closer to the grassline, farther from the water than Sköll had seen it go all day. This was his chance.
He shot out of the grass, a white streaked black blur. He snapped his jaws, but they only closed on where the pest had been a moment ago, catching a bit of fur. He spat out the fur in disgust as the creature disappeared into the murky water, disappointed at his failure.

Ayria knew she shouldn't be moving around much, but she couldn't simply confine herself to the den. Perhaps she couldn't go on a full territory patrol like she used to, but surely she wouldn't be harming her unborn children just by wandering around the Southern Thumb. If she needed to rest, she would, but now she needed to move, so she did.
As she walked, she caught sight of one of the pack members she rarely saw. His posture told her he was stalking something, so she crouched low to watch, unseen by his chosen prey. As much as she hated the cold, she did have to admit that her pale silver and white pelt were close to ideal for hiding amongst the snow.
The prey - a beaver, from the looks of it - wandered far from the water, and Skoll went after it, very nearly catching it. It was so close that she thought he'd been successful until the beaver continued to flee and disappeared into the water.
"Bad luck, there." The alphess made her way to her packmate. There was no need to hide, now. "You nearly had it. Still, that was an impressive display."

Sköll tensed up, unaware that he was being watched that whole. He recognized the voice, and when he turned his head, the appearance of his Alpphess. He glared into the water, at the beaver he knew was down there somewhere, for making him look bad in front of an alpha.
"Thank you, I'll get it next time," he promised, trying to redeem his failure. He shuffled his front paws a bit uncomfortably. He wasn't used to actually talking to his packmates, and certainly not an alpha. He would have to be on guard watch his tongue.
"Are you alright so far from the densite?" Sköll asked politely. Even from where he usually was on the outskirts of the territory, he had heard whispers of the alphess bearing pups soon. He looked over his shoulder at the nearest borders, making no intruders were nearby threatening the alphess. He should probably try to suggest escorting her back to the densite without offending her.

Skoll glanced at her, then into the water, and she thought she could guess what he was thinking. It was frustrating, losing prey, though it did need to happen on occasion to ensure that enough animals survived to contribute to their next generation.
She smiled when he replied. "I don't doubt that. Even though it got away, that was very skillfully done. I'm impressed."
He then expressed concern for her, and Ayria shook her head. "I'm fine. It isn't so far, really. I've been allowing myself breaks, when needed. Thank you, though." Her tail wagged. "I don't get to see you often. How have you been?"

"Yes, I'm usually on an all-day patrol," Sköll said with a chuckle. Thats what he called his lifestyle, distant from the rest of the pack. But that was the 'deal' he had with the pack, in his mind. He would get a quiet life and the safety of numbers, as long as he went on a pack hunt every so often and watched the borders. He wasn't a big contributor to the pack, but he didn't take a lot either.
His orange eyes flicked to the water in response to a splash. The darn beaver was taunting him. "I've been doing well, thank you. Mostly been hunting small game. When are your pups due?" he asked, the frosted white wolf keeping the conversation as general as they come.

Ayria nodded. "That is what I have heard, but I do like to see my pack mates, if for no other reason than to know they're safe and healthy." She smiled. "At least I get to see you now, and I'm happy to see that you've stayed fairly healthy." As much as she would prefer it, she wouldn't try talking him into staying near the dens more. Some wolves simply didn't like a lot of company, and she could respect that.
He glanced back at the water before saying more, confirming that he was doing well and then asking when her pups were due. Her smile widened. "Early spring, I believe. " She laughed. "Winter can't end fast enough."

Sköll nodded in agreement. The snow was a beauty, but it only for a few hours. The majestic view was too soon murky with mud and too often blood as well. Not to mention the bitter winds and the frostbitten noses winter brings with it. He didn't even want to think about the hunger the cold winds also brought with them, it made his stomach queasy and empty.
"Yes, I should probably drop in a little more often, especially now that the cold season is setting in," the frosted black wolf said. He wished he could be genuine about caring about the wellbeing of all of his packmates, but it was more of a reminder to them that he was alive and strong whenever he stopped by. Remind them that he was sort of part of the pack, even though he often felt like a stranger on his own land.
He flicked his thick black ears, and looked around for a foreign pelt to stand out against the grass. "Why dont we head back to the dens now," he offered. Might as well stop in and escort Ayria back to her home. And it would be slow progress, best to start now and not later.

Ayria nodded as he talked. "If you wouldn't mind." She smiled. "I would like to know that all the members of my pack are safe." And happy, but wintertime was hard on everyone. And it would be especially hard on her, given her condition.
"I suppose," she replied when he suggested going back to the den. "I really shouldn't be out and about so long..." She sighed. She was happy she would be a mother soon, but she wasn't entirely fond of the limits that pregnancy placed upon her. She wasn't used to being looked after and resting while others went about their tasks. It felt lazy. But then, keeping her unborn pups safe was just as important a task as any.
The alphess turned back toward the den and walked toward it, going slow and easy.
(Sorry. x.x Failpost.)

Sköll nodded. "I'll try to come to the densite every few days," he said, not entirely sure if that was a promise he could live up to. The black wolf looked sincere enough, but it would be extra traveling which was never a nice idea to his ears.
"So... where is the winter densite?" he asked with a bit of a nervous laugh. He would escort her back, but she would have to lead the way. He wouldnt dare linger near the densite as well, he wanted to be back out here by dark.

She smiled, her tail swishing back and forth a few times as they walked. "Thank you. I do appreciate it." She'd prefer more time, but she had to respect her more independent members' need for solitude. Part of her wished that she could be so independent, but she needed to be in a group to be happy. That was simply how she was.
"Not too far," she answered when he asked about the densite. "Just a short walk straight ahead." And it would be nice to lay back down, she supposed. She was happy with her condition, but carrying a litter of pups inside her was uncomfortable at times.
