Name: pace
Gender: male
Age: three years
Type: great plains wolf
Pack: eastern
Rank: beta
Items: glittery fur, gala eyes, painted nose, single piercing, feathers, spikes, armor, fire control, and fire breath
Appearance: truly, pace is quite the sight. not only is he muscular, handsome, and has the quality of relative youth on his side, he is also distinctly and uniquely marked. he is very much aware of his physical appearance and is immensely proud of it, and thus his brisk, purposeful pawsteps are practically dripping with self-confidence (and maybe an extra helping of arrogance). with sharply angular physical traits (strongly defined facial lines and keen eyes, for example), he gives the impression of being carved out of stone, contained precisely within his given frame. on the larger end of his species, he weighs a little over one hundred pounds and extends an easy six and a half feet from nose to tail tip. he is taller than average, but he has the habit of lowering his head (as though lowering a set of horns) when he walks.
the owner of a coat made consistently of charcoal black, pace would not be nearly as fascinating to look at if he was one of his 'normal' cousins. though dark-furred, he was blessed with unusual (or perhaps not so unusual, given that there are others such as himself) flecks of glimmering reds, oranges, and yellows fringing his pelt. it is as if sparks have come to rest eternally in his fur, most prominently seen on his paws, along his jaws, and the tips of his ears and tail, but scattered along his entire body, albeit less frequently. difficult to see in some circumstances, they are easiest to find in a certain angle of sunlight. he has dark paw pads and claws, but the leather of his nose is also touched with the appearance of fire, as though a blaze has started just under his nostrils and extended up to the line of short, fine fur on his muzzle.
pace's eyes have the inescapable appearance of almost literally turning ablaze at some points. while naturally golden yellow, they are liable to change should he come under some annoyance. at first, it may only be a flicker, a grazing glance of impatience should you waste his time. but gradually, as his ire rises, the fire in his heart lifts into his gaze and demands the utmost attention immediately. as his temper is soothed, the flare drains out and his eyes return to their normal hue. it should be mentioned, however, that even without their tendency to change, his eyes are striking in and of themselves. with the quickness of a bird, very little escapes his vision and it is easy to be transfixed by their sharpness. although not penetrating, his gaze is direct and unabashed, as though offering a challenge.
not all of pace's abnormalities are merely for show. on the contrary, he was given both spikes and scaly armor to complete his dragon-like air. looking very much like vertebrae that have grown past his skin, he has a row of sturdy, somewhat blunted spines that starts where his skull and spinal cord meet and ends at the tip of his tail. the spikes are not incredibly long; at their beginning, they barely poke above his fur. then, they increase rapidly in length, with the largest directly between his shoulder blades, and after that they shrink down again at a slower pace. his underbelly and the lower half of his throat are protected by thick, tough scales that match his coat in color. although they have saved his life on numerous occasions, they can be penetrated, either by strong wolves or though persistence.
pace loves to make good first impressions, and so over time he has acquired jewelery to only further his individuality. his left ear has been pierced on its outermost side, near the base and close to his head. the earring itself is a small silver hoop embedded with a dark red garnet stone, slightly tarnished with time, rain, and other day-to-day inconveniences. also, his left ear has two scarlet cardinal feathers tucked behind it. the feathers are held together with a thin leather cord adorned with three colored beads; the first is red, the middle one is white, and the last is black. while both feathers have a touch of black on them, one is significantly darker than the other. the earring was a gift given to him by some foreigners, while the feathers were something he picked up and decided to use himself.
Temperament: pace is a natural born leader. assertive, confident, and ferociously competitive, he knows exactly what he wants and takes whatever steps necessary in order to get it. he does not second guess his own motives and believes himself to be in the right in any given situation, because hey, if you won't have faith in yourself, who will? unfortunately, this also means that he has the inherit need to be the boss and has difficulty following orders. he must be his own wolf and will not change merely because someone tells him to do so. his thoughts, opinions, and ideas are his own, leading him to be considered a bit of a maverick (or insolent fool; take your pick). energetic, he blazes (sometimes literally) through projects with exuberance, but is also prone to brashness. a creature of extremes, he is noisy, overbearing, and rude at times.
while tactless, pace reaches for the stars. he sees everything as being full of possibilities and finds nothing wrong with dreaming big. he enjoys helping others achieve their wants and desires out of the misguided but well-intentioned notion that he is some kind of superhero and it is his duty to help those weaker than he. he is, however, completely blind to his affect on others. oblivious both of gratitude and wrath, he does not realize when his rashness in speech and action harms someone else. he must be told outright, otherwise he will merely continue life as though nothing has happened without giving it a second thought. possessing boundless courage, he accepts challenges head on. he is also prone to intolerance, and becomes increasingly impatient with anyone slower, weaker, or less intelligent than himself.
despite this, in his heart of hearts, pace believes in the best of everyone. an idealist, he firmly asserts that even the blackest of souls have at least a tiny sliver of good will in them. a strength as well as a weakness, this also means that he is gullible and can be tricked into helping an enemy. a jealous beast, he will immediately dislike anyone who appears to be better than him at something. the secret fear within his heart is that he will not be liked or valued unless he wins, and so anything that threatens his superiority is received competitively, as a challenge to better himself. thus, it is extraordinarily difficult to detect this insecurity. he is willing to take risks not only for himself but for others as well, particularly his packmates. he is, however, sometimes deaf. it is, after all, easier to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.
pace is the champion of the underdog. he wants more than anything to be remembered as a hero mothers tell their pups for generations after his passing. fortune favors the brave, so he is willing to take a stand for something even if it appears to be a lost cause. while obviously capable of selfless acts of kindness, courage, and generosity, he tends to do them out of selfish desires and is generally self-absorbed. an overgrown cub, it seems, he can become surprisingly harsh and stingy should his own needs fail to be met. in times of plenty he will share his meal, but you're on your own during times of hardship. his optimism and honesty, on the other hand, never fail to shine through. his life is an open book; he lives in the present, so why does his past matter? impulsive and spontaneous, he loves being alive but does not fear death.
because of this and his faith in other wolves, pace is willing to be a sacrifice in favor of someone or something he loves. what better way to go down in history than to be the martyr who gives his life to save another's? it is his duty as a warrior, a soldier in his pack to be sure his death is an honorable one, to go out in a blaze of glory. in his eagerness to do good, he is a poor judge of character, and will take unnecessary risks for undeserving, even malicious wolves. judas, beware; a war-like male ruled by his heart rather than his head, you take your fate into your own paws when you betray one such as pace. determined, he will continue action even after others have given up, and denies failure until the bitter end. do not try and tell him to stand down; a defiant soldier above all else, he will not listen.
