Appearance:
Kaine is tall and lean, with her build bordering on medium and showing signs of having once been better fed. Her thick pelt is primary navy blue, though she sports a white underside and white stocking markings on all four legs. Her pelt is reflective, and so often has tinges of green, brown, or gray among the navy and white. Her blood red eyes are always alert and focused on something, but rarely on another wolf even if she's in the middle of a conversation. Framing her eyes and shielding the top of her muzzle are a series of black scales that form a sort of mask on her face. Black quills/spikes line the top of her neck, back, and tail, at times poking through her pale blonde mane. The mane is fairly long, reaching about halfway down her front legs at the lowest point, and flows behind her when she flies or runs. Her wings are large and draconic - sporting navy blue scales and white leather. Her claws are the same black shade as her armor and spokes, but are long and retractable and quite noticable against the white of her paws.
Temperament:
Kaine isn't the most social wolf you'll ever meet. In a pack or all alone, you're more likely to find her wandering around some distance away from her den than among a group of her own kind. This isn't to say she can't tolerate other wolves. She can tolerate one or two others for an extended period, and can deal with a group when it comes to important matters, but she tends to prefer to be left alone with her thoughts.
Kaine is a sort of middle ground between nice and mean. She doesn't often go out of her way to help others, unless someone somehow worms their way into her heart, but she doesn't go out of her way to hinder or belittle them either. In the same way, she's not unpleasant to talk to...most of the time...but she's not the best of company either. Her tendencies are to simply tolerate anyone around her and leave them be as long as they leave her be. She isn't much better to anyone that does manage to make friends with her, though she does look out for those individuals and shows she cares in her own way.
Kaine holds a grudging respect for packs and stronger loners. When she was still in a pack, loyalty and obedience to the higher-ups was strongly enforced and that part of her still exists even as a loner. She tries especially hard not to get attached to elders, pups, and disabled wolves, knowing how fragile life is even for the strongest individuals. When she does come to care for someone, the feeling is intense, and things like death hit her particularly hard.
History:
Kaine's family pack was very large, as packs go. It was large to the point where the alphas were forced to restrict breeding rights. Only they, the betas, and a few of the strongest females were given the privilege the year that Kaine was conceived. The fall and winter of that year were harsh, and weather and starvation killed many members and lead to more than one miscarriage. Spring brought on further tragedy with stillborns and early pup deaths. Only three pups managed to survive to be weaned, each from a different leader: Kaine was the betas' daughter and Erin and Tristan came from two different non-ranked pairs.
The alpha was getting old, and all his living pups had since moved on to form their own packs. His mate had died giving birth to a dead litter, and he had no desire to take on another mate. Instead, he watched over the pups as they played, waiting to see who among the survivors was most fit to be the next alpha. This took quite some time. Erin was by far the weakest of the three, but Kaine and Tristan were more or less equal in strength, intelligence, and fighting capability. When neither showed any weakness against the other, the alpha determined that the two should be mates and trained them for leadership together. Kaine fell in love with Tristan and thought he was falling for her in turn, and she was looking forward to taking over the pack with him by her side.
The three pups - having no other pups in the area - had been best friends all their lives, and even with the future seemingly set the couple spent as much time as possible with Erin. Over time, however, Erin began to visibly fall for Tristan, and he began treating her with the same affection he and Kaine shared. Gradually, less and less affection passed between Kaine and Tristan, and it became clear not just to her, but to the whole pack that Tristan and Erin would someday be mates. Kaine distanced herself from the two. It hurt, and she felt betrayed that Tristan would choose Erin over her when they seemed destined to be together, but she didn't want to stand between them. She tried to be the good friend, tried to be happy for them, tried not to let the bitterness overtake her. She failed at that, but managed to keep everything bottled up for the sake of her only friends.
Then the pups turned two, and the alpha was feeling the drawbacks of old age to the point where he simply couldn't perform his duties anymore. Still, with Tristan choosing Erin over Kaine, he was left with a problem: which of the two would take over for him? To resolve this once and for all, he gathered the pack together and had Tristan and Kaine fight for the title.
With her bitterness having been kept in check so long, the fight seemed like the perfect release. She gladly made the first move, charging at Tristan full-force. Hesitant to attack his friend, he was bowled over and pinned down with sharp claws and a bite to the side of his neck.
Somehow, he managed to wriggle free, and the fighting commenced. It took quite some time - the two wolves were fairly evenly matched, just as they had always been. Gradually, Tristan gained the upper paw, and - several wounds later - he was sitting in front of her and she was on her side. Both remained where they were, wounded and bleeding in the grass that was their battleground.
A short time passed, but Kaine was unable to get up. Tristan was declared the alpha and a healer tended to the wolves' wounds. Once they were healed, Tristan took Erin as his alphess.
As Kaine watched the happy couple, she knew she could never be happy in the pack. Perhaps not in any pack. She ran away, heading as far away from her former home as she could manage each day. The howls of her former friends haunted her. They were chasing after her, she knew. They wanted her back, but she was determined not to go back. In the end, she had gone too far for them, or they had simply given up. Either way, she finally had peace.
And so she continued to wander, and has done so since.
