The day was overcast with just enough of a breeze to refresh someone without threatening to knock them off their paws. It was perfect flying weather, and - since she had no pressing duties - Vesperi gave in to the urge to spread her wings and soar above the territory. Her default form had no wings of its own, so she borrowed the form of a hawk and sliced through the air, glancing down occasionally to see if she could spot a packmate but mostly letting go of everything that weighed her down and enjoying herself for the first time since the welcoming winter chills gave way to blossoms and warmth.
It had been a harsh season. Vesperi was raised in the far north, where most of the year was cold and unforgiving, so she thrived in the snow. Most of the rest of the pack hadn't fared as well, it seemed. Even the alpha male hadn't been seen in some time. At least, not by her. The only wolves she had seen in or out of the territory were Renaissance, and...well...that had been it. She hoped there were others and bad luck kept her from meeting anyone, but she knew how winter could take its toll and either kill wolves or drive them away.
Movement caught her eye and she looked down, spotting someone on the ground. A packmate? An enemy? Either way, she should go meet them. She circled downward, shifting into a wolf once she was near enough to the ground to avoid breaking a bone or five.

| Finishing her morning rounds on border patrol and marking the territory, Renaissance had fared well through the winter, her native home was Greenland, and the winter here was bad, but more mild than her old home. Renaissance, with her saber fangs and white fur stood out somewhat oddly in all the green shrubbery. She sat to think on current affairs. She had not seen Xane or Zafera in some time now and she was left to consider the worst. Since Xane had gone missing, she was left to manage the pack affairs and lead as the appointed Alphess. The food supply was low, and she was ashamed to admit she did not know how many of her pack members were still around. She had seen Vesperi. She did not know of Russet and Wulfsige, but she heard more recently from Wulfsige than Russet. She feared the worst for Russet, and she was sure she had gone missing as well. Assuming Russet gone, they were down three pack members and she did not know how many more were scattered through the territories. The good thing was that she had maintained daily scent markings and the border warnings were strong.
We must go hunting soon... something to unify us, or we may as well disband... Eyes of crimson flashing in her grim thoughts, the practical wolf was left lonely aching, but she had to put that aside. Suddenly however, she saw the form of Vesperi alight the ground as she shifted from a flying morph to her true form. She turned to greet her, -"Hello Vesperi, how was your flight? Also... I've been thinking, and I believe we should go on a hunt, for food supplies run low and we must unify the pack once more," She greeted her soundly and carried right on to her point firmly. Her gaze was fiercely determined. She would not give up this pack without a fight.

As she descended, she recognized the form of her alphess, and she bowed once the change was complete. It was good to see a packmate again, especially one of the alphas, and most especially the alphess. She felt an odd kinship with Renaissance since they were both from the far north, even if it was entirely different locations.
"It was nice," she answered when the alphess asked about her flight. She almost stated how she had hoped to see more wolves, but she left that thought unvoiced. She hadn't caught sight nor scent of the alpha in the longest time, and she was sure that'd be a sore spot for the other she-wolf. They had been mates, after all. "A hunt would be ideal if we can manage it. How many of us remain?" It was a question she hated to ask, but necessary. The number of wolves determined how large their prey would be, as well as tactics.

| Nodding pleasantly to Vesperi as she bowed, the snow white wolf closed her eyes, perhaps painfully as Vesperi asked the question she knew she would have to answer to, but hated to. Renaissance answered firmly, but pained, -"For now I fear only you and me. I have not seen Xane in the longest of times... or Zafera. Wulfsige I heard from a week or two ago, but not from his mate Russet, not even from before the winter started. I do not know of Britt or Zalenus...," Only now did the true reality of the condition of the pack hit, from 8 or 9, to 2 known wolves in the pack? They could hardly be considered a pack, if she were to be honest. Looking into Vesperi's eyes, she held tightly to the kinship of the other wolf, the only one she knew who was left. "I will however, head to the pack camp center, in the forest clearing, and echo a call for the hunt, to any who may remain. I have been told my voice is hard to miss," she smiled softly, remembering showing Zafera her musical talents and howls. Turnign around to start walking, the white wolf looked back and her earnest eyes obviously said, Follow me.
May Lady Luck deal me a favorable card this day...
Lyrics: N/A Notes: N/A OOC: Actually Renaissance and Xane weren't mates, Xane appointed Renaissance to help things actually, just wanted to note that. ^^ The were more like good friends. also, I think we should start a new thread specifically for a hunt. =) That alright?

-♦-"Bonded by a journey and a father, daughter love. We two will come back with more power that before!" Xane&Zafera.-♦- [/i] A cool breeze ran through their coats. Their tongues hung from their mouths. It was a playful event, a happy event. Two wolves frolicked through the field of tall spring flowers. Insects and butterflies swam with frustration as their calm aura was briefly interrupted. Newly budding flowers were destroyed under their rambunctious steps and rough paws. The two ran around and away from eachother. Nipping of hind ends and tail tips.
A sturdy, male grey wolf ran away from what appeared to be a moss green pelted female. She was smaller than him, but in the way a female was supposed to be. She was almost full grown now. It been a little over a month since the two had stepped paw into western territory. They could feel the homely scent returning to them. It had been far too long, today was a wonderful day. It would mark the end of their journey back home.
The two stopped at a slow flowing stream, their bodies wishing for some refreshments. They lapped up water in a few moments of silence. She lifted her head first, "Xane...?" her voice was low with concern. He looked up at her, his head tilting, "what's on your mind kid?" he was probably worried about the same thing. "What... What if the pack doesn't accept our return back... What if they have a new alpha now?" her voice was filled with distress and worry. He looked at her with his eyes filled with hope, "don't you worry..." he tapped his nose softly on the top of her head, "I... we will reclaim our home if need be, I have faith in you my daughter", he stepped out of the stream with confidence. She smiled softly and followed after him. She hoped nothing would stop them from returning home. If anything, she hoped the only thing between them were a few angry wolves and not a new alpha starring at them face to face.
The two trotted side by side, venturing deeper into old pack territory. Excitement tingled throughout their bodies. For him, he felt his pride returning to him. He would fight for his pack, he wouldn't give up on them. For her, she felt the new hormones of growing into an adult wolf. She was different from when they had departed. Inside, they both hoped their story would be okay with their pack members.
It wasn't long before he was able to pick up on some scents. Very few, but still there were familiar scents. His tail tagged lightly, renaissance. He remembered hers instantly. And then he picked up Vesperi. Other than that he didn't pick up any other scents. He wondered if everything was okay. They stopped in a small clearing. This is where they mostly stayed during the summer time. And all the seasonal resting places were never far from each other. A quick run away from each spot.
She sat down and looked at him, "shall we?" she smiled. He turned back at her, his eyes full of hope. He tilted his head back and started out with a call of his arrival. She joined in after him. Her lighter howl complimented his deeper howl. Their calls echoed throughout the forest. Their calls carried through the air with a recognizable harmony. Any wolf for his pack would recognize it. She stopped and he carried on a few seconds longer. "Now we wait for the best of the best..." she nodded at his response with agreement. The two sat side by side in anticipation. They hoped for the best.

| About to head off, Renaissance's eyes widened as she caught the scents o- she could not help herself from smiling, revealing her saber fangs, as she heard the familiar chorus. Xane and Zafera, and by both the scent of it and the sound of it, both were healthy and Zafera had grown very much. Within the moment she returned the howl, strong, loudly, and proudly, her musical voice of nigh perfection ringing out throughout forest. Wolves for a mile around could hear the female's joyful howl, mixed with Xane and Zafera's own. Turning to Vesperi, and nodding, she took off at a lope towards the other forest clearing, her golden, heart-shaped bracelets jingling lightly at her ankles.. Soon the stunningly bright, white wolf with crimson eyes and the musical voice stood before her friend and the young she-wolf she had gotten to know. Standing tall, the female examined the two with her quick, analytical gaze. The Alphess found neither worse for wear, and noted that fern-green Zafera, if she were to dramatize, had nearly doubled in size. Never one to really express her emotions in dramatic fashion she did bear to give a smile and her tail did wag a few times as she greeted them both, -"It is good to see you both after such a long time!" Than her expression turned a bit more sober as she spoke, -"Vesperi will come shortly, I'm sure. I... do not know where any of the others are... Were any of the others with you? Where did you to go, if you don't mind sharing," Renaissance nearly flinched as she met Xane's gaze. The female had great pride in herself and high standards and she chocked up to admit what she considered personally, her failure to complete her duties as Alphess, to make sure everyone made it through the winter. yes things happened, but to lose almost half the pack over the winter? She should've been stripped of her rank and put at Omega, at the least. She felt horrible about it, but she wouldn't admit. Her empathy told her Xane and Zafera had been hoping, and she had a good guess on what they'd been hoping for.
Truly, I have failed, at least, to some extent...

((Sorry for the length/quality. Hard time focusing, and its a horrible day today. x.x I was lucky to get this much done.)) Vesperi listened, ears and tail lowering further as Renaissance detailed the pack's situation. Things couldn't get much worse, it seemed. There would be time for grief later, though. For now, they had to survive. As long as breath filled their lungs, things would never be completely hopeless.
Then the howls sounded. Renaissance howled along with them, and Vesperi joined in a moment later. The two she-wolves then headed toward th source of the other voices. Vesperi hung back a bit as they ran and remained a few paces behind the alphess once they were reunited with two of their packmates. This moment was for the alphas and pup. She - being a normal-ranked wolf - didn't want to intrude.

-♦-"The journey we endured together only made us stronger mentally and psychically" Xane&Zafera.-♦- [/i] They sat for a while in silence. Then a bubble of laughter came from the young wolfs muzzle. His ears flicked back for a slight second at the disruption, he looked at her, "did I miss something?" his tail lightly dusted the ground. She smiled at him, "are you going finally going to tell ren?" her eyes sparkled. He shook his head, "how did you even know about that?" he stared at her intently. She smiled, "I have my ways..." her voice lowered as she heard the return call from renaissance. "We will discuss that later, young miss!" he playfully growled. The they awaited the pack; or whoever was left to, returned.
Renaissance finally appeared through the brush, both wolves stood up at aged their tails. She went on to explain about vesperi, then his heart began to fall as she asked him[/] where the rest of the pack was. His worst thoughts were true. The rest of the pack had disappeared during the rather hard winter. His tail dropped a little bit, "unfortunatly, they were not with me... I suppose the winter storms had diapered everyone from eachother..." his voice was low, as he did not want to break the news.
The young wolf remained quiet for a few seconds to allow the thought to process. Then she jumped up and rubbed her muzzle on the white wolves neck, "renaissance, I missed you so much!" her tail wagged with excitement. "How was winter for you? Were you okay?" the questions bubbled out her muzzle with worry. She stepped back a step, "my spikes grew bigger!" she gleamed a smile and within seconds quills shot out from her back. A deep laughter came from behind her, "put those away! I told you they were meant for protecting yourself, not showing off!" he stood up next to her, smiling. She giggled softly, "you're no fun..." she sighed and let her quills sink back in.

| A certain degree of sadness glazed over Renaissance's crimson eyes as Xane comfirmed that none of the pack besides Zafera had been with him. Through and through, the winter had done its damage. But seeing Xane and excitable, young Zafera again brought some joy and hope to her heart. "I missed you and Xane as well, and I was fine throughout the winter, though pickings were somewhat lean at points," - she answered Zafera with a slight smile. Renaissance held an amused expression as Zafera showed off her dangerous quills and spikes, shooting them out, many spikes hitting the surrounding area and trees with a thunk. Laughing slightly as Xane scolded her softly, Renaissance told the fern-green she-wolf, -"Yes, that is impressive Zafera, just don't take to shooting prey with them!" The white wolf felt a bit better seeing Zafera's own excitement, but then her eyes met Xane's, serious discussion obviously on her mind. She had not forgotten about wanting to go on a hunt just yet.
Perhaps things will turn out well, just maybe... |

-♦-"Time to get things back into place. There may be only four, but we will flourish" Xane&Zafera.-♦- [/i] The young fern green female smiled as the quills sunk back into her body. She looked up at renaissance for more appraisal, but her eyes said she wanted to speak with her adopted father. She took a couple steps back and sat herself next to Xane. Her tail still wagged, as the excitement was still coursing through her. Then again, she was always usually in a happy mood. It reminded her of when she met renaissance. She smiled internally, that was a good day.
He was looking down at her when she had decided to settle herself next to him. He cherished the connection they had, it was a strong one. He abruptly looked up at renaissance; whom was intently staring. He shook his thoughts and realized she had wanted some further discussion. He had thought about her previous comment. If the prey was slim maybe her stomach had wanted to do most of the serious talking. Then again, it wouldn't take much... There ere only four of them...
He smiled at her, "something tells me more is on your mind, renaissance..." he lightly spoke. He had figured she had more on her mind. It would only come it by asking. Even though with her as alphess she didn't need to ask anything. But he respected that she still did.

Vesperi watched the group, happy that they were reunited. As she stood there, though, she began to feel uncomfortable. This was a moment for the alphas and the pup, and she was simply…there. Possibly an unwanted presence. They weren’t asking her to leave, but they weren’t including her in the conversation, either. Perhaps that was how it should be, and she should just be on her way.
Yes. She should be on her way. She wasn’t needed here.
Vesperi padded backward until she was several paces away from the trio, and then turned around and ran off, heading to a different part of the territory.
